As part of the Masters of Clinical Exercise Physiology program in the school of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences, postgraduates are required to apply their knowledge in a personal training setting. As such, we are looking for clients to receive fully supervised, one-on-one fitness training and physiological assessments. This is a tremendous opportunity to receive 5 weeks of individualised, evidence-based instruction from a postgraduate student. All sessions will take place under the direct supervision of an accredited exercise scientist. Clients will have the opportunity to train in our newly upgraded state-of-the-art strength and conditioning lab in the HMNS building. Please see the information below for details on the program. 

What:  One-on-one personal training for 5 weeks at UQ's world class training facility

Cost:   $150 in total (Such services are typically in excess of $500)


Schedule 1: 6:30-7:30am Tuesday and Thursday

Schedule 2: 5:00-6:00pm Tuesday and Thursday


Week 1: Initial assessments on Tuesday September 13th

(A 2 week break will follow to allow for program design and approval, in addition to the mid-semester break)  

Week 2: First week of training. Tuesday 4th and Thursday 6th October

Week 3: Second week of training: Tuesday October 11th and Thursday October 13th

Week 4: Third week of training: Tuesday October 18th and Thursday October 20nd

Week 5: Fourth week of training: Tuesday October 25th, Reassessment on Thursday 27th October

Included in the program: 

  • Fitness counselling and 7 personalised one-on-one training sessions over 5 weeks in a modern, climate controlled training facility at UQ.

  • An individualised home-community based fitness program tailored towards your own personal fitness goals and lifestyle demands. This allows you to fully capitalise on the program by undertaking directed independent training between one-on-one sessions.

  • Education aimed towards maintaining physical activity levels following the completion of the program. This will provide you with the skills required to successfully progress through your future training while minimising the potential for detraining or relapse.

  • Comprehensivepre- and post- fitness testing of key aerobic, strength, flexibility and movement qualities. This information will identify physiological characteristics and will monitor changes in performance from the training plan.

  • A full written report of your results, accompanied with detailed explanation of how these results translate into practical effects (eg: sporting performance, tasks of daily living, health related implications).  

  • A premium service for excellent value. Industry standard personal training rates typically range from $90-$150 per session in the inner city. As such, this program delivers 7 sessions plus thorough fitness testing for what would typically be the cost for only a single session at many training studios.   

Who is eligible to register?

  • Those who are NOT currently meeting the physical activity guidelines of 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity on at least 5 days per week.

[This is important because most Australians are in this category, and our students need to develop skills in helping people become more active] 

  • Those who are NOT already participating in a sport and wanting a training program to help improve performance (e.g. preparation for a triathlon, swimming meet, rugby tournament, running events etc...).

[This is important because, at this stage of their degree, our students are not trained to provide performance enhancement programs] 

  • Those NOT wanting a rehabilitation program due to a recent injury that is still causing pain/significant limitations in movement during everyday life activities.

  • Those who DO NOT smoke cigarettes on a daily or weekly basis NOR have quit smoking in the last 6 months.

(Females only) Those who are NOT currently pregnant NOR have given birth within the last 12 months.

[Both of the points above are important from a risk management perspective] 

It is important to note, that the eligibility criteria is in place for the safety and wellbeing of both you, as the client, and of our students. 

How do I register?

Please download and complete Stages 1 and 2 of the screening questionnaire below. The completed form should then be emailed to This information allows us to understand your current health status and assist with the eligibility criteria as we want the best experience for yourself and for our students. The coordinator will then contact you via email or phone to confirm your interest and eligibility, and to arrange a session time you for you to attend. Sessions will be allocated on a first-in first-serve basis.
