Exercise and Sports Science is one of the fastest growing professional areas in the world and the discipline has quickly become an extremely popular area of study.

If you are interested in the study of exercise, anatomy, biomechanics, human growth, nutrition, rehabilitation, coaching, skill acquisition, outdoor education and the sociology of physical activity, then a career in exercise and sport science could be for you. Studying this science can open up an exciting variety of careers such as a clinical exercise physiologist and sport scientist.

Exercise and Sport Science is concerned with the understanding and enhancement of human movement. The study of human movement looks at general physical activity pursuits (such as goal oriented fitness regimens and recreational sport), as well as elite sport and the area of performance enhancement. It applies the knowledge, methods and applications of sub disciplines (i.e. exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control, and exercise and sport psychology) as well as exploring how they interact with one another.

What can I do with a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Sciences?

UQ exercise science graduates may be employed in major hospitals, private practice, rehabilitation clinics, academies and institutes of sport, health and fitness centres, community organisations, or Universities.

Exercise and sport sciences graduates can pursue a diverse range of roles including exercise and sport scientist, strength and conditioning coach, health promotion officer, cardiac technologist and sports development manager.

Graduates who complete the Clinical Exercise Physiology major can work as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist prescribing exercise to different client group’s including athletes, the aged, people with musculoskeletal conditions, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Professional Membership

Exercise and Sport Sciences graduates are eligible for membership with the Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science (AAESS). Students completing the Clinical Exercise Physiology major are eligible for accreditation as a clinical exercise physiologist and will in turn able to provide Medicare services to people with chronic and complex illnesses.
 

What will I study?

As a student of Exercise and Sport Sciences you will learn in a variety of settings including our on-campus laboratories (boasting up-to-date scientific equipment), Sport and Exercise Psychology Clinic and professional organisations (with over 400 hours practical placement). This will provide valuable experiences during your program and will ensure you are fully prepared for professional practice.

You can expect to study courses such as anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor control, exercise science, sports medicine, exercise prescription and health promotion.

You will learn a variety of valuable skills to prepare you for a successful career in this field including: 

  • how to appraise the exercise needs of the community
  • practical exercise science methods to enable the prescription and programming of exercise
  • programs for different client groups
  • how to develop athletes performance using the sports sciences
  • and how to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and with the wider community

Students who enrol in the Clinical Exercise Physiology major will also learn how to prescribe exercise to different client group’s including athletes, the aged, people with musculoskeletal conditions, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, kidney disease, cancer and/or neurological impairments.
 

What are my options for further study?

There is great potential to use your degree as a basis for further study in areas including clinical exercise science, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics and sports coaching. You may also choose to move into a research career in an area of interest.
