Many graduates work in schools where there main tasks are teaching and developing curriculum materials for physical and health education, and/or coaching sport. You will also be qualified to teach middle years Science , making you an even more versatile and highly sought after graduate.
Outside school settings, you may pursue careers where their focus is on exercise program planning and implementation such as sports coaching, sports managing, recreation and sports development and health promotion. Profession Memberships:
Graduates of this program are eligible for membership with the Queensland College of Teachers and work as teachers of Physical Education, Health and Junior Science.
What will I study?
As a student of Health, Sport and Physical Education you will gain skills and knowledge in the complex and diverse nature of human movement from physiological, biomechanical, socio-cultural, psychological, teaching (pedagogical) and health perspectives.
Your program will include over 100 days of active practical placement where you will be immersed in a school or approved alternative educational setting. During your placement you will experience what life is like working in the field and get a taste of the responsibilities involved in a career in health, sport and physical education.
You can expect to study courses such as exercise physiology, youth, sport and physical culture, motor control, social construction of curriculum, health promotion, pedagogical applications and clinical physiology.
You will learn a variety of valuable skills to prepare you for a successful career in this field including:
- the complex and diverse nature of human movement
- how to teach health, sport and physical activity in both school and community environments
- how to teach science in schools
- how to lead change in curriculum development and evaluation
- how critically appraise education innovations and research
What are my options for further study?
This program provides students with a solid grounding to continue onto postgraduate study in areas such as exercise physiology (gain qualification as an accredited exercise physiologist), and sport coaching.
Research can be taken in areas such as biomechanics, exercise physiology, functional anatomy, motor control, nutrition, sport science, physical activity and health.
