Sport and Exercise Psychology

 

Master of Applied Psychology (Sport and Exercise)

Offered jointly with the School of Psychology, the Master of Applied Psychology (Sport and Exercise) (MAppPsych) (Sport & Exercise) is a two-year degree specifically designed to allow graduates to obtain registration from the Psychologists Board of Queensland and membership of the College of Sport Psychologists within the Australian Psychological Society. The MAppPsych (Sport & Exercise) features:

This program provides an umbrella framework including a core and a series of fields, each of which will meet requirements for membership of one specialist College of the Australian Psychological Society. The Master of Applied Psychology provides training, including core professional skills and a specialist fields in Health Psychology, Counselling Psychology, or Sport & Exercise Psychology to meet Australian Psychological Society accreditation. Completion of this program will equip students to work as registered psychologists in their chosen professional field.

Placement Courses:
Students are required to complete 1000 hours of supervised practice over four semesters. Every effort is made to place students within a reasonable distance of the UQ campus but they can be expected to travel up to 60 minutes away. Students are generally placed at Ipswich, Brisbane, and the Southeast corner of Queensland. Students are required to have a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) before starting their practice. There will be no extra costs to the student in addition to course fees except for incidentals such as travel and daily expenses. The Clinical Program Practicum Handbook provides additional information about practicum and school experience requirements and is available from the School of Psychology.

Entry Requirements: Honours I or II in psychology or equivalent undergraduate psychology degree approved by the Australian Psychological Society.

Before applying, students with non-Australian degrees must apply to the Australian Psychological Society for assessment of their qualifications.
All applicants are required to submit a certified copy of their official transcript and/or degree certificate, three referee reports and complete the application form that seeks to ascertain students' suitability for the program. Shortlisted candidates are also required to undertake an in-depth interview with staff from the School of Psychology. 

There is a quota of 10 students across all fields of the program. Offers will be made to applicants on the basis of highest academic rank, referees reports and interview.

For both domestic and international students, a formal offer of acceptance in the program will be conditional on applicants successfully gaining probationary registration with the Psychologists Board of Queensland, which includes the Board's English Language Proficiency requirements. Probationary or full registration is a prerequisite for entry to the degree, and also for the commencement of both coursework and practica in the program. This registration must be maintained for the duration of the program.
 
Availability for International Students International students must undertake this program on campus at UQ on a full time basis to be eligible to apply for an Australian student visa. Please contact the International Education Directorate.
