Sports Coaching
Overview
Sports coaching is a challenging and rewarding profession which seeks to enhance athletic performance. The focus of the postgraduate programs in sports coaching is the development of advanced and applied sports coaching skills essential for developing successful high performance athletes.
Graduates of the programs in sports coaching will have professional qualifications suitable for employment in sports institutes, professional sports associations, and schools.
Why Study Sports Coaching at UQ?
There is high demand for innovative and well educated sports coaches in all sectors of sport. The online delivery of the Sports Coaching Program provides a flexible study opportunity to cater for the busy lives of practicing coaches.
The Postgraduate Programs in Sports Coaching are a joint venture between the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), and the School of Human Movement Studies at The University of Queensland. Expert academics, researchers and elite coaches have combined to develop relevant courses that integrate theory, research and coaching practice.
The authentic experiential learning approach connects learning to current coaching practice and contexts with a focus on developing the coach-athlete performance relationship.
The program is available at three levels, with students able to articulate from the Graduate Certificate to the Graduate Diploma, and the Graduate Diploma to the Masters as they progress through the program.
- Graduate Certificate in Sports Coaching
- Graduate Diploma in Sports Coaching
- Master of Sports Coaching (#24 units)
- Master of Sports Coaching (#16units)
There is also a major in Strength and Conditioning available at Graduate Certificate level, with students able to articulate to the Graduate Diploma or Masters of Sport Coaching on completion of the Certificate. More information on Strength and Conditioning is available here.
Entry Requirements
To enter the program, students hold an approved degree; or satisfy the executive dean that, based on the student’s post-secondary study and work experience, the student is suitably qualified for admission.
All applicants should have a minimum of 5 years coaching experience prior to enrolling.

Application form for domestic students
Application forms for international students:
International students may not undertake the program on campus at UQ on a full time basis; they may only study from their home countries and will not be eligible for an Australian student visa. International students are to use the domestic application form and send directly to the School of Human Movement Studies.

Studying Sports Coaching on Line
The UQ Sports Coaching program is unique in that the entire program is offered on line. Students have the flexibility to study and where at any time due to the flexibility of the on line resources and ability to contact teaching staff.
