Background

Dr Cliff Mallett joined the School of Human Movement Studies in 2000 after a career in physical education teaching and also in elite coaching as a National High Performance Coach in track and field with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS). He teaches undergraduate and graduate students and actively researches in the area of elite sport. Dr Mallett is a registered psychologist in Queensland and a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and the College of Sport Psychologists (CSP) and regularly consults with elite triathletes, track and field athletes, and rugby players. He has consulted and presented to many sports and organisations: AFL, Athletics, Cricket, Kayak/Canoe, Netball, Track and Field, Triathlon; Athletics Australia, IAAF, Brisbane Lions, AIS.

Teaching

Dr Mallett teaches Advanced Sport and Exercise Psychology in the undergraduate program and coordinates Australia 's leading postgraduate programs in Sports Coaching in which he teaches Sport Psychology, and Pedagogies for Coaches. Students in the PG programs in coaching are practising coaches from around the world, and mostly coaches of elite athletes and teams. The suite of courses in the postgraduate programs in coaching are delivered online through Blackboard and are part of a joint venture between the School of Human Movement Studies at UQ, the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and the AIS. In 2006 he received a commendation for excellence in teaching from The University of Qld.

Coaching

Dr Mallett has coached extensively at the elite level coaching 15 international athletes (12 medals), including 6 Olympic athletes, and national relay teams (6 medals) in major international competitions. He has been a team coach on several Australian teams at the Olympics (1996 & 2004) and World Championships (1995, 1997, 2003, 2005, 2007). Dr Mallett is a leading international coach educator consulting to the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) and Sport Knowledge Australia. He also consults with the Brisbane Lions Australian Football Club, AIS, QAS, and the UQ Rugby Academy.

Research Interests

Dr Mallett has developed a strong research program in two broad and interrelated research areas - coaching and sport psychology.

The specific areas of interest within sport psychology and coaching are:

Motivation within the framework of self-determination theory (SDT)

Coach development:

Dr Mallett recently led and completed a research project examining how coaches learn in the Australian Football League (AFL). The AFL funded the project, which is framed within the workplace learning literature. He is currently leading a team of researchers examining learning and mentoring in high performance sport at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). The Australian Research Council (ARC - Linkage) is funding the project (2007-2009) with the Australian Sports Commission and the AIS.

Dr Mallett is on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Coaching Science, which is the official journal of the International Council for Coach Education (ICCE). He is also a Section Editor for the International Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology.
