Background
Louise McCuaig joined the School of Human Movement Studies in 2003 following a fourteen year career in teaching health and physical education. She completed her undergraduate degree in Human Movement Studies at The University of Queensland and has returned to UQ to undertake her PhD. In addition to her diverse experiences in Queensland schools, Louise has worked as a Commonwealth Project Officer on the National School Drug Education Strategy. She lectures in the health and physical education teacher education program of the undergraduate degree with a specific focus on pedagogy and health education.
Research Interests
Currently Louise is undertaking her Doctor of Philosophy degree which seeks to explore the relationship between health and physical education teacher subjectivities and their engagement with contemporary health and physical education curricula. Her work involves a Foucauldian analysis of the role of health and physical education as a form of governmentality, in particular the discourses and practices that cluster around the biopower pole of population. This project will employ discourse analytic methodologies including a genealogical study of health education and the collection and analysis of a number of physical education teachers' life histories. Of particular interest is the imperative of risk and care discourses within contemporary health education, and their impact on the work and positioning of contemporary health and physical education teachers.
