Background
Richard Tinning is professor of pedagogy in the School of Human Movement Studies. Previously he was professor of physical education at Deakin University where he pioneered the use of distance education for inservice teachers of physical education. He has been a chief investigator on ARC large grants relating to school physical education, been involved in major curriculum development projects, worked on large scale professional development programs for teachers and been a consultant to both schools and universities.
He has published widely in scholarly and professional journals and authored or co-authored numerous books and monographs. He has delivered keynote addresses at many Australian and international conferences including the prestigious Cagigal Lecture at the AIESEP International conference, Taipei, June, 2001. In addition to presentations at international conferences Richard has been a visiting scholar at universities in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, the UK and Sweden.
He is a fellow of the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education & Recreation and the Association Internationale des Ecoles Superieures d'Education Physique.

Prof. Tinning's research interests are informed by a socially critical perspective and include:
- physical education teacher education
- physical education pedagogy
- pedagogical work for the body
- physical education and the healthy citizen
