Background
Robin Burgess-Limerick is an associate professor within the School of Human Movement Studies. He has been a member of academic staff since 1995, and prior to that has held research positions in a number of organisations including the Division of Workplace Health & Safety, and the Medical Research Council Applied Psychology Unit (UK). Dr Burgess-Limerick completed his Bachelor of Human Movement Studies, and Hons degrees at The University of Queensland, and returned to the University to undertake his PhD in the area of manual lifting coordination. He is a Certified Professional member of the Ergonomics Society of Australia Inc.
Dr Burgess-Limerick has been involved in teaching at the University since 1987, tutoring in functional anatomy and movement control courses, and then lecturing in biomechanics, research methods, and human factors courses. Most recently, Dr Burgess-Limerick has coordinated the initiation of a postgraduate suite of programs in Ergonomics which commenced in semester 1, 2002 with an initial cohort of 36 students enrolled in Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, and Masters programs in Ergonomics. These interdisciplinary programs involve courses taught by staff from five faculties across the university, and are designed for maximum flexibility. Consequently, students have been attracted from NSW, VIC, SA, WA and Singapore as well as regional and south-east Queensland.
Dr Burgess-Limerick is an active member of the Ergonomics Society of Australia Inc, having served on the state branch executive, various national committee, and is a past editor of the national journal of the society, Ergonomics Australia. He continues to coordinate the electronic version of this publication, Ergonomics Australia On-Line, and moderate the national email list for Australian ergonomists, aus_ergo@lists.uq.edu.au. Dr Burgess-Limerick also hosts the UQ Ergonomics web site (ergonomics.uq.edu.au). He is currently serving a second term as a member of the professional affairs board of the ESA Inc. In addition to school administrative responsibilities, Dr Burgess-Limerick is a member of the advisory committees of the ARC Key Centre for Human Factors and Applied Cognitive Psychology (SBS faculty), and the Centre for On-Line Health (HS faculty).
Research Interests
Dr Burgess-Limerick has eclectic research interests ranging across the broad scope of ergonomics from visual perception and movement control, through the application of occupational biomechanics to questions of manual handling and office ergonomics, and most recently in the area of workplace interventions to prevent injuries due to manual tasks. His research has been funded by grants from the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission, ARC, NHMRC, Workcover Queensland (QComp), the Joint Coal Board Occupational Health and Safety Trust (NSW), and most recently, the Australian Coal Association Research Program. He is an associate investigator of the NHMRC partnership grant in injury awarded to the university in 2001. He collaborates with a diverse range of investigators from centres such as the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, the ARC Key Centre for Human Factors and Applied Cognitive Psychology, and disciplines including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and Psychology.
