Overview

Postgraduate Research candidates in Human Movement Studies carry out a sustained program of research that produces original findings.  Research students report the outcomes of their research in a thesis, which is examined by external examiners.
Because of the emphasis upon supervised research, students entering any of the postgraduate research programs must have a supervisor before being accepted into the program.  Usually a supervisor is a staff member in the school.

There are a number of students currently undertaking Postgraduate Research Degrees.  A list of these students is available here.

Postgraduate Honours

Postgraduate Honours is an additional year of full-time study for suitably qualified bachelors degree graduates who have completed their undergraduate (pass) degree with a high grade-point average in advanced subjects.

Graduates from the UQ BSc and BScApp(HMS) degrees administered through the Faculty of Biological and Chemical Sciences and graduates from equivalent degree programs from other universities are eligible to undertake BSc (Hons) in the field of human movement science.

Graduates from the BA degree of UQ and graduates from equivalent degree programs from other universities are eligible to undertake BA (Hons) in the field of sports studies.

Students who have completed majors in both sports studies and psychology within the BA degree and who wish to target professional preparation as a sport psychologist may undertake a joint honours degree in the field of sport and exercise psychology.

Both BSc(Hons) and BA(Hons) involve #16 of study of which some 50 - 70% is devoted to a research thesis. These are HECS-liable courses for Australian students.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

Students entering the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree require at least an Honours Class II degree or the equivalent. The MPhil thesis provides evidence of significant research as the culmination of 1-2 years full-time equivalent study and research training.

For more information about the Master of Philosophy click here.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a University-wide degree offered through all schools. For students to be considered as PhD candidates, they must have a Class I or IIa Honours Degree (or equivalent) or an approved Masters degree involving a significant research component.

The doctoral thesis provides evidence of a contribution to knowledge with a level of originality consistent with 3-4 years of full-time study and research training.

For more information about the Doctor of Philosophy click here.

Supervision

There are two ways for students to establish whether there is a member of staff available to supervise their research.

The first is to submit an application for the course either through the School's Postgraduate Coordinator or through the University's Office of Research and Postgraduate Studies. The application will then be considered by staff who work in the discipline area in which the student has indicated a desire to work.

An alternative route is for the student to send a copy of his/her curriculum vitae and covering letter directly to the School's Postgraduate Coordinator who will then approach staff to establish whether they are available to provide supervision.

Prospective students are invited to review the list of staff and their research interests.
