Why Study Human Movement Studies at UQ?
The University of Queensland was founded in 1909 and was the first University in Queensland. It currently has over 37,000 students studying in a range of programs from Certificate to PhD level.
The School of Human Movement Studies was formed in 1941 and is the oldest school of its type in Australia. The School is based at the University’s St Lucia Campus. The School is located in the sports precinct, with includes an athletics stadium, rugby, soccer, hockey and cricket fields, softball diamond and 50m swimming pool.
The School itself has an indoor basketball court, gymnasium, human performance laboratories, computer laboratory, and numerous teaching and research laboratories with equipment such as Hologic Delphi Bone Densitometer for measuring human bone density; a Medtronic Treon Stealth Station for 3D surgical navigation; Optotrak 3D Position Sensors for measuring small movements in three dimensions; a Silicon Graphics SGI ONYX 300 Server for virtual reality research studies; and a Qualisys Motion Analysis system.
Undergraduate
Undergraduate study designed for students who have completed their
secondary education and who wish to gain a qualification in a specific discipline.
Students interested in human movement studies are able to enrol in the following undergraduate programs.
- Bachelor of Human Movement Studies (Exercise Science)
- Bachelor of Human Movement Studies (Education)
- Dual Degree: Bachelor of Human Movement Studies (Exercise Science)/Bachelor of Business Management (Physical Activity)
- Bachelor of Arts (Sports Studies)
Postgraduate Coursework
Postgraduate course work study is designed for students that have either completed an undergraduate qualification, or have significant relevant experience in discipline, and wish to either gain a qualification in a different discipline or expand their experience within their current discipline.
The School of Human Movement Studies offers a broad range of postgraduate courses covering the full spectrum of the biological, social and health sciences. There are multiple entry to, and exit points from, most postgraduate programs offered by the School.

Postgraduate Research
Postgraduate research study is designed for students that have completed an undergraduate qualification, usually with honours, who wish to undertake a program that will provide research training in a manner that fosters the development of independent research skills in candidates.
The School of Human Movement Studies is one of seven schools within UQ’s Faculty of Health Sciences. It is widely recognised as the leading unit of its kind in Australia, conducting multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching, research and community and professional service programs on movement, physical activity and health that are of the highest international standard.
