What school subjects do I need?

Human Movement Studies

For entry into the BHMS degree, sound achievement is required in:
English and ONE of Physics, Chemistry or Biological Science (Health Education, or Physical Education, or Health & PE are not required, but may be helpful)

Arts

For entry into the BA degree, sound achievement in Senior English is required.

What entrance score do I need?

Entrance scores vary from year to year dependent on student demand. In 2007 an overall position (OP) of 8 was needed for entry into the BScApp (HMS) (renamed BHMS in 2008) and an OP of 11 was needed for the BA in 2007.

Can I do two degrees in Exercise Science and Education?

Yes. Once you complete a 4-year Human Movement Studies degree in one stream, you can then finish a degree in the second stream in an additional 2 years. It is more customary to finish the Exercise Science stream first and then complete the Education stream. You could therefore complete two degrees in Human Movement Studies in 6 years (remembering that each core degree is a 4-year degree).

Do I have to be good at sport?

Entry to HMS is based on academic criteria only. However an interest in sport, physical education and health is advantageous, particularly for students interested in careers in teaching and coaching. A number of Olympians, world champions and national representatives in a range of different sports have graduated through the program, and a number are currently enrolled.

How does the entry quota work and when do I apply?

Information on entry procedures is available from your school. Applications for programs at the University of Queensland are via the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). If you wish to specialise in HMS through the BHMS degree you should apply for entry into the 732101 quota. For the Bachelor of Science degree, apply for entry into the 731001 quota. For applicants for the Bachelor of Arts degree, apply for the 707001 quota. For non-school leavers, QTAC forms are usually available about August. A telephone call to QTAC [(07) 3368 1166] will ensure forms are mailed to you
or visit www.qtac.edu.au.

Is there mature-age entry?

There are no special entry provisions for mature-age students. However there is no reason why a mature-age person cannot complete the program. QTAC do use special tests to assess mature-age students.

Can I do a dual degree in Human Movement Studies and [something else]?

Yes. The School offers a dual degree in Exercise Science and Business Management. Students will be able to apply for entry after one year of study in the single BHMS program. A dual degree can also be done through the BA and Human Movement Studies courses can be taken.

Can I study the degree part-time?

The only restriction on the duration of the program (for a student who is not failing subjects) is that credit for a course is cancelled after 10 years. Within that restriction, a student may take low levels in some semesters (i.e. enrol part-time). Note however, that courses are not separately timetabled for part-time students and that very few courses are offered in the evenings. Any employment commitment has to fit in with the normal timetable for courses.

How do I enter the BHMS specialist streams?

There are two specialist streams within years three and four of the BHMS degree — Education and Exercise Science. Upon passing the first year and a half of the program, students may freely choose to enter either stream.

What kinds of courses are included in the BHMS degree?

In the first year students do a broad base of science courses, that cover biology, physics, psychology, anatomy and biochemistry, plus HMS courses. Second-year courses are basically in the core areas of HMS. Content covered in second year includes biomechanics, skill acquisition, socio-cultural aspects of physical activity, sport and exercise psychology, communication, and exercise physiology, together with second-level courses in physiology and in functional anatomy. This gives students and understanding of a broad range of areas within HMS. Students then undertake extensive fieldwork and specialised studies in their third and fourth years. Students with good grades in the four-year degrees may receive their degrees with Honours (at the end of the fourth year).

What kinds of courses are included in the BA degree?

Students undertaking majors in Sports Studies within the BA degree complete a range of courses in both Human Movement Studies and other University departments on social, cultural and psychological aspects of human movement. A major in this degree will not equip you to work in exercise prescription or health and physical education teaching.

How much physical activity is included in the course?

In second year all BHMS students engage in the qualitative analysis and peer teaching of physical activity. BHMS students in the Education stream complete a physical activity course in their third year. In any year of the program, some students might volunteer to participate in physical activity as part of the ‘laboratory’ component of some courses, e.g. Exercise Physiology.

What am I qualified to teach after completing a BHMS - Education?

Graduates from this program will have Physical Education and Health Education as their first teaching areas, with a second teaching subject area in Junior Science. This degree qualifies graduates to teach in primary, secondary and special schools. It could also lead to careers in health promotion, health education, community leadership, and outdoor education.

What other job opportunities are available through the HMS courses?

Possibilities include: exercise/sport psychology, sports administration, research and academia, health promotion, ergonomics or occupational health and safety, coaching, community leadership. More detailed lists are available here.
